A 2" gel wheelchair cushion for people at medium risk of pressure injuries. There's no air inside and nothing to pump. It takes up to 220 kg and comes in nine sizes, from 16" to 22" wide.

When you sit in a wheelchair, most of your weight rests on three small spots: the two sit bones and the tailbone. The Equagel General is made to take some of that load off them.

The cushion is a grid of hollow columns made from dry-polymer gel. Once enough weight presses on a column, its walls fold. Under the pelvis the gel gives way and you sink in a little. The columns further out stay upright and hold you in position. The back of the cushion is contoured, so there's still 1¼" of gel under the pressure points after it compresses.

It's built in two layers. On top is thin-walled gel in a tight grid, which is the part you feel when you sit down. Underneath, a thicker and wider grid does the supporting.

Air moves through the open grid, and Aidacare rates Equagel cushions at 12 to 15 °C cooler than air or foam cushions. There are no valves, pumps or air cells. Nothing needs inflating, checking during the day or patching.

The cover is vapour permeable, fluid resistant and fire resistant. It has a non-slip base, a carry handle, a Velcro positioning tab and a zip at the back. It isn't waterproof, so add a waterproof cover if incontinence is likely.

How the Equagel General Works

The cushion uses a unique dry-polymer gel grid system made up of flexible hollow columns. When pressure is applied, the columns beneath high-pressure areas fold and redistribute weight, helping reduce concentrated pressure points.

Its two-layer construction provides both comfort and support:

  • Upper gel layer: A fine grid of softer gel columns that responds quickly to body pressure for comfort and pressure relief.
  • Lower support layer: A stronger, wider gel grid that provides stability and maintains support during extended sitting.

The contoured rear section helps maintain gel support under key pressure areas, even after compression.

Key Benefits

  • Pressure relief support for wheelchair users at medium risk of pressure injuries.
  • No pumps, valves, or inflation required – ready to use with minimal maintenance.
  • Improved airflow through the open gel grid design to help reduce heat and moisture build-up.
  • Stable positioning support while allowing pressure redistribution.
  • High weight capacity supporting users up to 220 kg.
  • Available in multiple sizes to suit different wheelchair widths.

Comfortable Cooling Gel Design

Unlike traditional foam or air cushions, the open gel grid design allows air movement through the cushion structure. This helps improve ventilation and provides a cooler sitting experience during extended wheelchair use.

Durable Cover Features

The included cover is designed for everyday healthcare environments and features:

  • Vapour-permeable fabric to support airflow
  • Fluid-resistant surface for easier cleaning
  • Fire-resistant material
  • Non-slip base to reduce movement
  • Carry handle for easy transport
  • Velcro positioning tab for secure placement
  • Rear zip opening for convenient cover removal

Looking after it

Wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry with no heat. Heat damages the non-slip base and can void the warranty. The gel can be hand washed in warm water with a little dish soap, rinsed, then left flat to air dry.

A cushion helps, but it doesn't replace regular repositioning, skin checks and advice from a health professional.

FAQ

Q. How does the Equagel General reduce pressure?

A: Its gel columns fold once enough weight presses on them. Under the sit bones and tailbone they give way, so weight spreads over more of the cushion instead of sitting on those three points.

Q. Who is the Equagel General for?

A: People at medium risk of pressure injuries who sit for long periods, mostly wheelchair users. It's a prevention cushion. For an existing pressure injury, the Equagel Protector or Adjustable Protector is usually recommended.

Q. Do I need to pump it up?

A: No. It has no air cells, valves or pump.

Q. What's the weight limit?

A: 220 kg, the same for every size.

Q. How tall is it?

A: 2", with 1¼" of gel left under the pressure points once it compresses.

Q. Is it cooler than foam?

A: Aidacare rates it 12 to 15 °C cooler than air or foam cushions, because air can move through the open gel grid.

Q. Is the cover waterproof?

A: No, it's fluid resistant. Waterproof covers are sold separately.

Q. How do I wash it?

A: Cover: cold, gentle cycle, tumble dry with no heat. Gel: hand wash in warm water with a little dish soap, rinse and air dry flat.

Q. What sizes are there?

A: Nine, width × depth in inches: 16×16, 16×18, 16×20, 18×16, 18×18, 20×18, 20×20, 22×18 and 22×20.
